Norwegian Star Cruise: Expert Review 2023

norwegian cruise line star reviews

The food that is served in the two restaurants is the same each night, while the actual menu changes each day. Since I was going to buy WiFi and at least three nights in specialty restaurants, would only be about $80 per person ($12 per day) more to get the Free at Sea perks and we could get unlimited drinks. I thought being able to get specialty coffees and bottled water anytime we wanted would be nice. In this post you’ll find my full Norwegian Star review including info about the staterooms, dining options, amenities, kid’s club, art auctions, and shore excursions. When it comes to activities onboard, the best resource for guests is the Freestyle Daily, which is Norwegian Cruise Line’s onboard ship schedule.

Where does Norwegian Star sail from?

Cagneys Steakhouse had very good food especially the Filet Mignon steak (highly recommended). A few in our group tried some of the other steak cuts at the restaurants and none compared to the quality of the Filet Mignon. Other good options at the restaurant are the onion soup (very good) and the shrimp cocktail.

Norwegian Star Staterooms

We did not see too many people using the main pool on our journey, largely due to the colder weather during our itinerary. Some of our personal favorite bars and lounges onboard were the Sugarcane Mojito Bar, the Proof Whiskey Bar, and the Bliss Ultra Lounge. The beds in the cabin could be split into two separate beds, and that is how our stateroom was configured.

Mid-Ship Balcony

Even though we don’t drink, I thought it would also be nice to have the Premium Beverage Package so we could get smoothies, sodas, virgin cocktails anytime we wanted. You also have to pay gratuities on the full price of the drink package ($100 per day so $20 for tips). But I don’t mind that one bit, the crew works hard and deserves every penny of that. Staterooms on cruise ships are small, and the rooms on Norwegian Star were no exception.

Where can you sail onboard Norwegian Star?

O’Sheehan’s Bar & Grill, A Norwegian Cruise Line classic can be found onboard, too. This restaurant and dining venue is a 24-hour eatery for guests to grab a tasty bite at any time during the day. If you don’t have an excursion booked through Norwegian, you’ll want to get a tender ticket to minimize your wait. In Santorini and Mykonos, the tender was a really short ride so it really helped keep the wait times down. One of the things that I love about Norwegian Cruise Line is the abundance of food options. I have never seen a ship the size of Norwegian Star offer so many options.

The kids' clubs can be a great place for children to meet other kids their age as well as participate in age-appropriate activities and games throughout the cruise. We also thought that the stateroom bathroom was great for an older cruise ship. We chose to dine at Ginza for our first night onboard and had a lot of fun trying out this special venue restaurant, as not all Norwegian Cruise Line ships feature a complimentary Asian restaurant.

One Day In Dubrovnik, Croatia

In the stateroom itself, there was only one North American outlet and this was in the vanity area which was part of the old cabin configuration. The ships didn’t have USB-C connections so this made charging electronics challenging while using a laptop. The stateroom steward Andy took good care of the room during my voyage.

Guests will all receive a complimentary printed copy of the Freestyle Daily in their staterooms each night of a cruise. For nightlife and a tasty drink guests, do not need to look far! There are nine different bars and lounges onboard this older ship. All of these have been updated and refurbished and can provide a great atmosphere for guests to relax and enjoy a drink after a long day exploring an exciting port.

Big Benefit of Booking a Cruise a Year in Advance (That Most Overlook)

The food ended up exceeding my expectations (although I admit those expectations were low). While the main buffet and dining room weren’t great, the specialty dining was excellent. The bathroom was small as well, but the layout was one of the better ones on a cruise ship. The shower was actually a decent size, and the toilet had a separate door. The interesting thing about this cruise was that the first 2 days were in Venice, so the ship stayed in port on Day 2 so guests could explore Venice. We opted to stay on the ship that day and added 2 days in Venice after the cruise was over.

I think some guests just choose to dine at whichever restaurant is closer to their cabin. There are a lot of larger guests onboard the cruise – it is a foodies paradise after-all – and some of them can’t walk very far. Out of all the older cruise ships I have been on so far, Norwegian Star has the best onboard shopping I have seen. As with any Norwegian Cruise Line vacation, it can be very important to reference the Freestyle Daily, the onboard ship schedule. Each night of our cruise, a physical copy of the schedule was delivered; this is a great resource for guests to find when and where entertainment around the ship will happen.

They have sadly taken out some of the more “contact activities” since COVID like the ultimate dance off where you partner with a member of the production crew and compete. One night they had suckling pig on the menu which was seriously delicious and we really enjoyed. A special mention to the fried vegetable pot stickers at Ginza which stood out from the rest of the menu and are worthwhile ordering if you decide to dine there. The menu for Versailles and Aqua changed nightly and for the most part I couldn’t fault it. Some of my personal highlights (if you see them come up) are the peanut bang bang chicken and shrimp and the rainbow trout. In addition to the production performances, there are 3-4 guest acts that Norwegian hires which perform in the Stardust theatre (the main stage).

We also met the cast around the ship and they were all really nice and friendly. They are allowed to access some of the guest facilities like the gym and buffet so you often see them around. In my opinion, this ship appears newer and in great shape for being over 20 years old!
